KL Fashion Weekend began in 2011 as a support programme for Tourism Malaysia Year End Sales promotion and the partnership with Tourism Malaysia lasted until 2015. KL Fashion Weekend was conceived following a study conducted by Tourism Malaysia after hosting KL Fashion Week in 2006 that a fashion week should not be under the helm of Tourism Malaysia (due to its nature as a trade event) and a retail promotion programme was needed instead. Dodi, the producer of KL Fashion Weekend was appointed as the consultant in charge of bringing in international press and buyers for KL Fashion Week 2006.
KL Fashion Weekend 2021 brings to the fore a collaboration concept between designers and singers to cross promote. A virtual fashion education fair involving fashion higher learning institutions will also be held in the mission to promote the Malaysian Fashion Education.
